Motorcycle Courses
In order to be allowed to ride a moped or motorcycle (up to 125cc and less than 11kw/16.6nbhp) unaccompanied with L plates (or D plates in Wales) riders need to undertake Compulsory Basic Training or CBT as it is commonly known. A CBT course is also necessary to validate a provisional moped licence for 16 year olds to ride a moped with L plates (50cc capable of less than 50km/h).
If you already hold a full UK driving licence you may already have full moped and provisional motorcycle entitlement in which case you can rider a moped without completing a CBT course.
CBT motorcycle courses are completed at an Approved Training Body (ATB). These courses generally cost between £70 and £100.
If you wish to obtain a full motorcycle licence you will need to consider if you wish to take to A1 (light motorcycle), A restricted or A licence:
1. An A1 licence will allow you to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc only.
2. An A restricted licence is the most common route for riders to take. It will allow you to ride for 2 years on a motorcycle up to 25kw/33bhp. After this time has lapsed you will be able to ride on any size of bike.
(For these licences above you must be at least 17 years of age. You will need to take a theory exam before you take the test.)
3. An A licence will allow you to ride a bike of any size straight away, however you must be over 21 years of age. You will need to complete a Direct Access course. Again, you will need to take a theory exam before you take the test.
You will need to apply for a provisional licence first before you can then look for motorcycle courses near you. Click on the link below to find the courses you need.
